Project Proposal

Introduction

In correlation to the brief this project is centred around weather, for centuries artists have been influenced and inspired to create work responding to weather. Some artist choose to capture beautiful scenes of sunlit hills or snowy mountains, While others explore marks and abstract forms to communicate and express how the weather makes them feel.

With this brief I am expected to create at least one creative outcome for a professionally presented exhibition at the college, so with this in mind I have to consider the audience and health and safety requirements set by the college guidelines. Additionally as part of the brief I am required to take ethical and environmental impact into account during my development of ideas and creative outcome processes.

As the world changes and is reaching its crisis point, it is equally important to contemplate the issues surrounding sustainability, access to raw materials and the potential to use recycled "waste".  Within my project I will be exploring climate change and pollution.

Theme

This theme leads me to a creative question; Dose climate change effect extreme weather and how can I  raise awareness of  climate change to a younger audience?  I feel it is important to target a younger audience as they are the next generation.

This is the question I will be responding to throughout this project and relating my research, developing ideas and outcomes to.

I have set my heart on approaching this question by exploring this creative problem through illustration, world building and character design by creating a comic/illustration book witch will communicate that our miss treating of our planet is affecting the weather and us in turn. Although keeping in mind furthering development into animation.

Deadlines

For this project I have a little longer than on previous projects, there is about 12 weeks from beginning to end this includes a two week half term. Although I have two deadlines within this the 13th of May is the deadline for completed creative outcomes and the 27th of may is the deadline for the entire project. To keep to these deadlines I have decided to create a weekly reflective blog where I can keep track of what I have done that week and write a to-do list of things that needs to be achieved next this way I can stay organised and unto date with work.

Audience

My targeted audience for this project is for children between the ages of 4 and 11 years old, however I will be looking at the college community and the colleges policies for this project also as my work will be put on display within the college setting and it is important that I know the guidelines required to display my work here although given my audience I don't think this will be an issue. In addition to identifying my audience I have asked opinions within this group on what they prefer, what they would like to see within a book/comic and what would a good addition be to the finished piece.

Presentation

I will be exploring ways in which to display my artwork in the college exhibition. I will be taking into consideration the best ways in display my work to enhance the overall look and feel of my art pieces. I will be displaying my final piece in a frame hanging on the wall for display in a one-page comic based on an original poem I created. I am also planning of having print outs in A4 for people to take away with them if they would like to. I feel that more people will be able to see my work this way, I think this would be a fantastic addition to my final piece for the exhibition.

Research

To support my project and current ideas I will be carrying out primary research to inform and develop my ideas, I have been to the natural history museum where I looked at some extreme environmental events such as volcanos and earthquakes. Volcanos have really piqued an interest for me as I have recently found that lightning can be caused by the eruptions. I have also looked at the wind through wind drawings.

To help with style and methods within my own work I will be using artists to support my ideas. I have been looking at comic book artists Skottie Young and Jake Parker, Character design and environments from the Disney film Zootopia and Studio Ghibli for world building and the style in which they create the overall scene. Besides my primary and artist research I will be l looking into the scientific side of weather and climate change and bringing in the effects on animals such as the red panda, and trying to merge this research with fantasy elements to make it more appealing to my audience.

Looking at my project and thinking about the purpose, I think this work will be important to raise awareness about climate change and the effects on weather, in a child friendly way as they are our next generation. I believe they should be introduced to the ideas now so they can make informed and better chooses in the future. This is something I have extensively researched and have incorporated into my project. This includes climate change, extreme weather and pollution.

To get inspiration for this project and produce initial ideas I first created an idea factory from an exercise I was given, and this sparked some initial ideas, looking at the audience I wanted to target I took inspiration from my daughter's interest for the environment and love for animals. To further this, I also spoke to other children to see if they shared the same interest, and they did so this created a concept for my project to build apron.

To achieve this project there is a few different materials I intend to explore starting with traditional and digital methods within illustration and concept art for an illustration or comic book, looking at moving it on to animation. Additionally I have thought about exploring clay sculpture to make my character come to life.

Ideas

Materials and Techniques

Some of the techniques I will be exploring are blending and layering with alcohol markers in a comic book style,  exploring is painting in acrylic and in watercolour. Additionally, I would also like to explore digital art and create some scenes and characters using photoshop. I have also been thinking about a 3D model of my main character using clay with a wire skeleton and foil to build the armature before coving in polymer clay.

Reflection and Evaluation

Throughout this project I will be recording a weekly reflection blog for an overview of the progress of the week and individually on each works in a more In-depth and comprehensive way.

I've set myself a weekly to do list of things that needs to be completed and things I would like to look at. This helps me prioritise and keep on track without falling behind or missing important thigs that I need to get done.

I will evaluate my own work by critiquing it using visual language and reflecting on how I could improve work, however it is also valuable to ask other people to look and have an opinion on my work from an outside perspective. At the end of this project, I will be writing an evaluation to record and depict my project in hole in a comprehensive and concise way.
